Economic, social and environmental justice though independent progressive politics.
The PPB core team recognizes three local progressive candidates who are pioneering the independent, bottom-up, viability-centered strategy that we advocate:
Kshama Sawant, District 3 City Council member in Seattle. Sawant has tirelessly and successfully fought for new policies that favor working class citizens. Her policy wins have included the country’s first $15 hour minimum wage in 2014, and a large tax increase on Amazon and other Seattle big businesses in 2020 (to be used primarily to foster affordable housing). Importantly, Sawant has consistently called for other independent progressive candidacies and the creation of a new working class party. She would normally be up for reelection in 2023, but sometime this winter she will have to face a recall election organized by right-wing forces.
Nakkita Oliver, District 9 candidate for city council in Seattle this November. Oliver is a strong advocate for a wide variety of progressive policies (including shifting funding from policing to nourishing the roots of community well being). An open member of the like-minded Seattle People’s Party (no relation to the Movement for a People's Party or MPP), Oliver placed third in a field of 21 in her 2017 race for mayor and first in this year’s top-two primary for city council.
Eve Seitchik, at-large candidate for city council in Somerville, MA this November. Seitchik, a co-chair of Boston Democratic Socialists of America, also is an outspoken progressive on a broad array of issues, prominently including the need for rent control. Unlike all other left candidates in the top-four November election, Eve has resisted aligning with the Democratic Party in favor of a more independent orientation, which could be a first step toward developing the base for a new local party.
